Our question of the week is;

Q. I ordered flowers for my sister online through Proflowers.com. The picture of the flowers was impressive and the price was unbeatable! However, my sister got a box of flowers that were falling apart, and they looked nothing like the picture! Not to mention, they were not in a vase. They refunded my money, but the occasion had passed and I felt terrible about sending my sister these "flowers in a box". Do you have any advice to offer that will help me make sure the next time I order flowers, I know what I am getting?

A. This is a common misconception of "grower direct". The price is too good to pass up, but now you know why. When a flower is cut, water is essential for long lasting beauty. A fresh cut flower out of water is a flower dying. Gardeners have also developed techniques to further prolong the life of your flower arrangement. This step-by-step process has been adapted over the years to ensure your flowers last longer than just a couple of days. As growers began to focus on volume, florists evolved for care and handling of your flowers (i.e. processing and design.) “Grower Direct” flowers lack two important factors that improve the lifespan of your flower arrangement. The flowers are sent inside a box, often deprived of water for a period of up to 24 hours. They also bypass your local florist, whose skilled processing techniques ensure that your flowers will last longer. Presentation is the key when expressing your sentiments with flowers. Asking your recipient to arrange their own flowers from a box may not be the impression you are looking to make. A professional florist is your best bet for a beautifully designed arrangement of fresh flowers. You will always get a better value when dealing with a professional florist.
